hi,I am just going to give you my thoughts on the development. I wish I could vote. It is ridiculous that builders can just come and bulldoze things like Russell Farm and make Stop& Shop a huge ugly box. No one wants this. You guys are helping, but to tell you the truth you are all talk. You should be out in the public getting petitions signed and doing whatever you have to save our little town of Wyckoff. I hope you use this advice to save what's left that is nice in Wyckoff. Reply to this

I attended the community information meeting for Save the Woods in Hawthorne last night. Over 100 residents attended from both Hawthorne and Wyckoff, a great showing for mid-August. The concerns focused on flooding impact, traffic and safety, and additional tax burden for increased municipal services. The energy of the community clearly dominated the room. Hawthorne residents understand that the development at CHCC, the ravine, and Russell Farms all contribute to flooding and storm water flow into Goffle Brook - flowing right into their back yards from Wyckoff. Wyckoff and Hawthorne residents can work together to protect their neighborhoods. Seniors and school children alike will be impacted. The status quo is not acceptable and only through continued education and community action will we be able to send our message to town hall. Please learn more so that the town that our long time residents have built will be maintained for the next generations. You will be suprised at what you may learn. Complacency and apathy should have no part in our community! Reply to this

Rob, Yes, and sooner than I thought! I will be interviewing with the 16 member county committee reps from Wyckoff on Sept 12. They will choose a candidate to replace Henry McNamara on the ballot, Jr. at that time. Thanks for your interest. Reply to this

I attended the Ravine hearing last night and feel dirty from sitting in the same room as those deplorable board members. EVERY one of them had an excuse for selling the Townspeople out. PATHETIC! Our "mayor" (note the quotes) Dave Conolly is a gutless coward talking out of both sides of his mouth as usual: "I'm for preservation,I love nature, we need to save trees, BUT...we need to protect the ravine and allow BOB MILANESE to RAPE IT or someone else might someday." Judging from the disgusting outcome last night, it is clear the Wyckoff Township Committee's only idea of open space is the ginormous paved parking lot (aka 4 acre heat sink) at the soon to be new and improved Boulder Run. What does "open space" in Wyckoff REALLY mean? Easy; that's the blank spot on the voting machine where I get to write in Diane Sobin for Township Committee this November and keep Rudy Boonstra from continuing his family's choke hold on the Wyckoff resident taxpayer. Really, what is the open space tax that I voted for going to be used on? I will go out on a limb here (oh, I cant because the Zoning Board allowed all my new neighbors cut down all the trees when they got their ask-and-ye-shall-receive variances) but I'll predict the future. Check back in 3 years to see how right I am, then call me Nostradamus: Joe Fiorenzo (who, in theory, could someday be a judge which is a REALLY SCARY thought because I've seen him at meetings where he has NO power except for controlling the microphone and what goes into the "official" record and the thought of giving more power to this control freak scares me to the core) and Rick Alnor will run on a "we kept taxes low and preserved open space at no cost to the taxpayer" platform (same lies they used last year) then they will say since THEY didn't spend the open space trust fund money THEY will give it back in the from of tax relief and you need to vote for them again so they can keep working for you. We'll certainly need the refund by then because the pressures from all the overdevelopment THEY encouraged and allowed will put a strain on our services, schools, and infrastructure, and taxes will go up anyway. Ask someone who lives next to a new McMansion they gave variances after variance to and see how their property values are. More importantly ask how it improved their quality of life. If you plan on living here longer than the time it takes you to flip the teardown Rudy Boonstra and his Wyckoff wrecking crew granted you every variances you asked for, get used to increased traffic, congested streets, pollution (noise air and sight), higher water bills and a decreased quality of life. This is a proven FACT they keep from you. If you were like me and voted for the open space tax, DEMAND they spend it for what YOU wanted: actual open space, and VOTE THEM ALL OUT! You will only see a change if you make it happen. Reply to this
I was at the vote as well and got up to leave in disgust when Kathy Scarpelli launched into her spiel. By that point it was evident to me and everyone else in the room that the approval was a foregone conclusion and that the decision was probably put to bed some time ago.
I feel worst for all the people who fought so hard for this cause, and I hope that the silver lining may come as more and more people in town realize just who we have minding the store.
I hope that voter anger will be elevated to the point where new people can now get elected in town, as the more i learn about our current 'club', and watch them in action, the more i am shocked.
You only need to witness the farce which took place Wednesday night to understand what is going on.
The more people get informed on what is happening, the better our chances for change. This may be the beginning. Reply to this

They had backhoes and were clear-cutting the ravine today. From where I stood it was not a "surgical", textured approach; they were trashing trees and debris right near the edge of the Ravine and some ran into the Ravine. It appears the developer feels he has a no stop, flat out green light to do as he pleases. I hope friends of Wyckoff or the town is monitoring what is happening b/c the destruction I saw already indicates reckless work and what we can expect, a complete devastation and destruction of the closest thing Wyckoff has to a throw back to the Arctic National Wildlife Preserve, it's not the ANWP but it's Wyckoff's own. And even based on the approval, the work they appear to be doing is out of compliance with what they stated in meetings and seems to be savaging the place.
I hope the town planning board has the courage to monitor the situation instead of the weak, ineffectual and pathetic leadership they provided on this issue when the people had clearly spoken.
They didn't even require the developer to comply with applicable law and variance requirements. We are all left to wonder about these men and what really went on.
The truth will come out and we'll have accountable government I'm sure; but not in time for the Ravine. Reply to this

Our best shot is to go into the voting booth and, at a minimum withhold votes from Rudy Boonstra, 15 year member of our Zoning Board of Adjustment and nominee of the Wyckoff political machine. You may also vote for a personal choice candidate. We must also engage concerned members of the community to get involved. It is the only way that we as citizens can protect our community.
